  • The Stan James Jockey Club Stakes was first run in 1894. The inaugural winner was Isinglass, who had won the Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger) the previous season.
  • Persimmon, owned by the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII), won the 1896 Jockey Club Stakes. He also captured the Derby and the St Leger that year.
  • Other Derby winners to have won the Jockey Club Stakes are Rock Sand (1904), St Amant (1905), Lemberg (1910) and St Paddy (1961).
  • It is no longer possible for a horse to win the Jockey Club Stakes and the Derby in the same season as, since 1963, three-year-olds have been excluded from the Newmarket contest.
  • Peter Walwyn and Pat Eddery teamed up for three consecutive Jockey Club Stakes successes in the 1970s with Orange Bay (1976), Oats (1977) and Classic Example (1978).
  • There has only been one dual winner in the history of the Stan James Jockey Club Stakes - Phardante in 1986 and 1987.
  • The great stayer Ardross won the 1982 renewal ridden by Lester Piggott. He also won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 1981 and 1982, as well as finishing runner-up in the 1982 Arc de Triomphe.
  • Sir Michael Stoute leads the way among current trainers with six successes in the Stan James Jockey Club Stakes, including with Gamut in 2004.
  • Following the retirement in 2003 of Pat Eddery, who won six renewals of the Jockey Club Stakes, the leading current jockey is Frankie Dettori who has won three renewals of the race. His latest was Sixties Icon in 2007. Frankie is pictured below collecting his trophy.

  • The winners of the Stan James Jockey Club Stakes between 2002 and 2006 all went on to taste Group 1 success later that season, helping to make the race one of the highest rated Group 2 races in Europe.  Marienbard, the 2002 winner, went on to land the WGZ Bank-Deutschland Pries at Dusseldorf, the Grosser Preis von Baden at Baden-Baden and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp; Warrsan, the 2003 winner, went on to take the Coronation Cup at Epsom; Gamut, the 2004 winner, went on to take the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud; Alkaased, the 2005 winner, scored subsequent victories in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and the Japan Cup in Tokyo; and the 2006 victor, Shirocco, took the Coronation Cup at Epsom. Sixties Icon (pictured below) who won 2007’s renewal had already won a Group 1 race in 2006 when taking the Ladbrokes St Leger, while the 2008 winner, Getaway, went on to win two Group 1 races in 2009.
