68 still engaged in the totesport Cambridgeshire Handicap

Tuesday 2nd October, 2007

A total of 68 horses remain engaged in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire following today’s five-day confirmation stage. The famous nine-furlong handicap takes place at 3.55pm and once again sponsors totesport will be offering each-way terms on the first FIVE horses home.

John Gosden looks set to have a strong hand in the race, with three well-fancied entries going forward. Escape Route was an impressive winner at Goodwood on September 15, while Pipedreamer also caught the eye when beating a big field at the same West Sussex track on his latest appearance on August 2. Ekhtiaar, fifth in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, is Gosden’s third remaining entry in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire - a race he won with subsequent multiple Group One winner Halling in 1994. totesport are offering odds of 3/1 for John Gosden to win the race with any of his three contenders.

Monte Alto, last seen when winning the John Smith’s Handicap at Newbury, could also take his chance. The three-year-old aims to give Luca Cumani a third victory in the race following Century City (1982) and Dallas (1986). The Newmarket handler has another possible in River Tiber, narrowly beaten at Ascot at the end of September.

Cabinet was another horse who finished second last time out. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained three-year-old colt was drawn wide at Chester on Saturday, and could attempt to give his trainer another victory in the race he last won with Intermission in 1976. Sir Michael Stoute’s other remaining entry, Greek Well, was a one time ante-post favourite for the Derby and has been in good form this season, winning on three occasions.

Championship Point did line up in last year’s Epsom Derby, finishing eleventh. Mick Channon’s four-year-old has this year won a valuable handicap at Goodwood, and could bids to be the first winner to carry top-weight to victory since Cap Julica in 1995. Snoqualmie Boy also ran in the 2006 Epsom Derby , and the Royal Ascot winner aims to give David Elsworth a third victory in the Cambridgeshire, following Lear Spear (1998) and 100/1 shot Spanish Don (2004). Warm Embraces is also engaged for the Egerton House handler.

Barry Hills looks to have a live contender in The Illies, who rattled off a hat-trick of wins on his last three starts, most recently at Doncaster on September 15. The Lambourn-based handler previously won the Cambridgeshire in 1990 with Risen Moon

Other interesting contenders in the historic nine-furlong handicap include Docofthebay, who finished behind The Illies at York, and Teslin, who has proved a different horse since being gelded and followed up on a Beverley handicap success with victory on the Natwest Rowley Mile in the 10-furlong Victor Chandler Nijinsky Handicap on September 22.

Last year’s third Pinpoint could aim to give trainer Walter Swinburn a first totesport Cambridgeshire success - one of the few big races to have eluded him during his time as a jockey.
