Fair Along (8st 5lb) is the 9/1 joint-favourite with totesport to give trainer Philip Hobbs a second consecutive success in the £160,000 totesport Cesarewitch following the victory of Detroit City in 2006.
Like Detroit City, Fair Along is also a high-class jump performer, having finished runner-up in the 2006 Triumph Hurdle (to Detroit City) and the 2007 Arkle Trophy. His one outing on the Flat this season saw him finish runner-up to Greenwich Meantime (9st, 25/1) in the totesport Chester Cup back in May. Hobbs could also run Liberate (8st 3lb, 16/1), second to Katchit in the 2007 Triumph Hurdle.
The Irish challenge for the totesport Cesarewitch looks particularly strong this year with seven possible starters from the Emerald Isle. These include the Tony Martin-trained Leg Spinner (8st 9lb, 9/1 joint-favourite), a winner at Ascot’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup fixture when partnered by leading Japanese jockey Yutaka Take. Martin also has Top The Charts (8st 4lb, 14/1) and Arc Bleu (8st 4lb, 16/1) engaged. The top-class Irish hurdlers Al Eile (8st 13lb, 16/1) and Essex (8st 8lb, 14/1) are also entered while Sandymount Earl (8st, 16/1), trained by Jessica Harrington, would certainly be an interesting winner as he is owned by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.
Samurai Way (8st 10lb, 12/1) represents the Luca Cumani stable and has given the impression that he would be suited by further on his last two outings when runner-up at Newmarket’s Ritz Club July Festival and Glorious Goodwood.
Inchnadamph (8st 2lb, 16/1), runner-up to Detroit City in 2006 and third to Sergeant Cecil in 2005, could bid to make it third time lucky while last year’s third Dr Sharp (7st 11lb, 25/1) is also engaged once again.
The maximum field size for the totesport Cesarewitch is 34 runners.
