Final Day of The Ritz Club July Festival
Monday 16th July, 2007
RECORD OVERALL ATTENDANCE FOR THE RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL
Today's crowd was 10,971, an increase of 6% on last year's total of 10,350.
The overall meeting total was 35,056, which beats the previous record for the Ritz Club July Festival of 34,089 set in 2005.
Richard Hambro, Chairman of Newmarket Racecourses, said: "We are absolutely delighted with how the meeting has gone. The crowds have been up every day and the success of the redevelopment has been resounding, with wonderful feedback from a wide cross-section of our customers.
"Equally importantly, we have had perfect racing conditions, with the praise from trainers and jockeys about the state of the track every bit as good as for the redevelopment.
"Lisa (Hancock), Michael (Prosser) and the team have done a tremendous job with the Ritz Club July Festival and it is now very much a case of onwards and upwards for Newmarket's summer highlight."
RITZ CLUB JULY FESTIVAL 2007 - REVIEW OF FIRST TWO DAYS
The 2007 Ritz Club July Festival got off to the best possible start for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, trainer John Dunlop and jockey Richard Hills when they enjoyed a 116/1 double with Tarteel in the Racing Post EBF Bloodstock EBF Fillies' Handicap and Shmookh in the totesport.com Heritage Handicap.
Wednesday was Classic FM day, with racegoers treated to live music throughout the day.
You'resothrilling, a full-sister to the great Giant's Causeway, showed she had all the guts off her brother when coming with a great run to collect the juvenile highlight on Wednesday, the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes, putting herself firmly in contention for next year's Stan James 1000 Guineas. Festoso came close to giving Harry Dunlop his first Group race victory when taking second at 40/1 while Queen Mary Stakes heroine Elletelle ran admirably in third under a penalty after missing the break.
Wednesday's highlight was the Group One UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes and the mile contest for fillies saw what must be a strong contender for ride of the week from Johnny Murtagh, who made all the running on the Jeremy Noseda-trained Simply Perfect. The filly is now a Group One winner at two and three and has an ambitious programme mapped out for the rest of the year which could see her heading to France and Canada.
An added attraction on the first day was the HBLB Lancashire Oaks, which was transferred to Newmarket following the abandonment of Haydock Park last Saturday. This race saw a remarkable performance from Turbo Linn who came home four lengths clear of Under The Rainbow. Trained in Yorkshire by Alan Swinbank, Turbo Linn has the unique profile of having won all of her five starts in National Hunt flat races and both her starts on the Flat, having also won a maiden at Catterick earlier this season.
Godolphin enjoyed its first two-year-old winner of the season with Rio De La Plata in the Ian MacNicol Memorial Strutt & Parker EBF Maiden Stakes while there were also wins for Urban Spirit in the Racing Post Maiden Stakes and Third Set in the Classic FM Handicap.
Lanson Ladies' Day on Thursday began with the biggest cheer of the week when Tranquil Tiger, trained in Newmarket by the ever-popular Henry Cecil, collected the Listed Bahrain Trophy.
A devastating last to first run saw Winker Watson, trained in Newmarket by Peter Chapple-Hyam, retain his unbeaten record in the Group Two TNT July Stakes. Jimmy Fortune timed his run to perfection on the 11/4 favourite, who won easier than his winning distance of a short-head would at first suggest.
The biggest shock of the meeting so far came when 25/1 shot Hearthstead Maison defied top weight to win the Kleinwort Benson Handicap under Greg Fairley. Trainer Mark Johnston admitted that he has found the horse slightly puzzling, although he feels Heathstead Maison will stay at 10 furlongs rather than step up in trip again.
Papal Bull may have not always been the most straightforward of performers but he is certainly not short of ability and he proved this once again with a two-and-a-half length victory in Thursday's highlight, the Group Two Princess of Wales's WBX.COM Stakes, despite drifting to the stands' rail in the final furlong. There was a dead-heat for second between Godolphin's back to form Laverock and the Marcus Tregoning-trained Shahin. The big disappointment of the race was 2006 St Leger hero Sixties Icon, who came home well-beaten in tenth.
Trainer Jonny Portman narrowly escaped death when driving to the July Meeting 15 years ago but he was in the winner's enclosure on Thursday with 14/1 chance Spanish Bounty in the Turf Italia EBF Novice Stakes. Traffic Guard was rewarded for his consistency with a victory in the Xplor Conditions Stakes while owner Ron Hull, who has just endured a triple heart bypass, was given the perfect tonic when Moorhouse Lad collected the concluding Voute Sales Handicap.
The redevelopment behind the stands has been well received by racegoers and there was a record July Festival attendance yesterday, Lanson Ladies' Day.
Race 1 - Ritz Club Handicap - Placed Quotes & Ground
GOSDEN DELIGHT AFTER TYBALT STRIKE
Tybalt produced a storming finish to secure the opening Ritz Club Handicap in good style.
The John Gosden-trained colt was eighth to Tobosa in the totesport.com Silver Bowl at Haydock last time but delivered a telling challenge today to rein in Artimino, bagging a 9-1 victory by one and three quarter lengths.
Gosden said: "He had a rough race at Haydock – he got knocked back. Although he would not have beaten the winner, he would probably have finished a bit closer. "Today he has run a nice race. He likes the ground on top so we had our ground. "Maybe he will run at Goodwood in the totesport Mile then we will head to the States.
"The Del Mar (Mile - Grade Two - August 19) and the Oak Tree (Breeders' Cup Mile - Grade Two – October 7) those are the sort of races that will suit him well."
RUNNER-UP MAY DROP BACK IN TRIP
Artimino, a 6/1 chance, was beaten a length and three quarters in the opening Ritz Club Handicap on Darley July Cup day and is now likely to drop back in trip.
Jacko Fanshawe, wife of trainer James Fanshawe, said: "That was a nice run.
"I have spoken to James and I think he will probably be dropping down to seven furlongs for his next start. I don't know where that will be, James will decide.
"Jamie (Spencer) said he really loved the ground today and he should be a nice horse for next season."
GROUND AFTER THE FIRST
Johhny Murtagh described the ground as: "Genuine good fast ground, it's lovely."
Richard Hills said it was: "Good to Firm."
Joe Fanning thought it was: "On the quick side."
Steve Drowne described it as: "Nice fast ground. No jar."
Ryan Moore thought it: "Good to firm."
Jamie Spencer said it was: "Quick."
Michael Hills said it was: "Good fast ground."
Philip Robinson described it as "Good fast Ground."
Richard Hughes and John Egan thought it was: "Fast."
Race 2 - Weatherbys Superlative Stakes - Winning & Placed Quotes
HATTA COMES GOOD
Hatta Fort recorded a neck success in the two-year-old highlight of the day, the Group Two Weatherbys Superlative Stakes.
The 4/1 chance was partnered by Australian jockey Hugh Bowman, who was riding his first winner for 26 days and 60 rides.
Winning trainer Mick Channon said: "We have always thought a lot of Hatta Fort
"At Royal Ascot, we thought he could win but the five furlongs was probably a bit too short for him.
"The two-year-old form from Royal Ascot has stood up well this week so we thought it was worth a shot today.
"The ground has been the other big difference today - it's nice to get some decent ground rather than the bogs we've been racing on this year.
"We will see where we go from here - he has a Group Two penalty now.
"I would like to think he we carry on with him in good races over seven furlongs."
Referring to Hugh Bowman's bad run of late, Channon added: "I have never been worried. Form is temporary - class is permanent."
Hugh Bowman added: "I was surprised I was that far back on the horse because he led over five furlongs when he won at Windsor. I wasn't concerned because the pace was hot. I had plenty of horse at the end."
On breaking a 60-race losing run he added: "I'm relieved to be honest. This is one of the longest stints I've had without riding a winner in my whole career. I've had a great start in the UK and the wet tracks have just played a bit of a part because Mick's been keeping his nicer horses for the better ground and this is one of the nicer horses. It's my second win on him and I'm delighted."
Speaking about his Darley July Cup mount Mutawaajid, he said: "He's a lovely animal. He's not well in at the weights. He races here as a four-year-old despite being only a three-year-old in his homeland, Australia. He's got a battle but he's atop-class horse and I'm sure you'll hear a lot more of him in the future."
Peter Chapple-Hyam, trainer of second-placed Declaration Of War, said: "He has run a great race but he needs cut in the ground.
"Okay, we took another chance on this (good to firm) because of the uphill finish. But his next race will be on softer ground."
Eoghan O'Neill, trainer of third placed Ellmau, said: "I'm delighted with him. Ideally, he would have liked softer ground but no excuses. He has run a great race.
"We will now try and win the Champagne at Doncaster. I've won it the last two times - we'll try and do it again."
Race 3 - Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup - Placed Quotes
GIGANTICUS LANDS LADBROKES BUNBURY CUP
Giganticus delivered a mighty challenge to give trainer Barry Hills the
2007 renewal of the £100,000 Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup.
The Giant's Causeway gelding was at the bottom of the weights and made that tell as he roared home to grand effect, holding King Of Argos for a sizzling 16-1 success.
Philip Robinson was on board, giving the four-year-old a fine ride to secure victory by a neck.
Hills said: "It is nice when the pennies fit the slot. Seven furlongs is probably his trip.
"He lost his way a bit last year, holding his breath. We had him gelded and there was always a decent race in him.
"It has been hard to get the horses consistent this year with the weather.
Most people's horses are up and down.
"He will run in these sort of races."
Successful rider Philip Robinson said: "I got a lovely lead from Neil
(Callan) who took us down the centre and then slowly edged this way a bit.
"Giganticus picked up nicely when I asked him to and stayed on to the line, which was nice."
Totesport cut him to 14 (from 25) for the totesport International at Ascot on July 28.
DUNLOP HAPPY - SOMETHING TO DROP BACK IN TRIP
Ed Dunlop was more than satisfied with the effort of King Of Argus, beaten a neck by Giganticus in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup.
The Newmarket handler said: "He ran a great race.
"There are no excuses. He picked up well but we were just beaten by a better horse on the day.
"Surprisingly, there wasn't a great deal of early pace for a Bunbury Cup and maybe a bit more cover would have helped him.
"I'm sure there is a big handicap in him. He is entered in the totesport Mile at Goodwood. Wherever he goes, he needs fast ground."
A further neck back in third was Something and trainer Terry Mills is eyeing a drop in trip to six furlongs with his charge.
Mills said: "Something has run well and has given the winner the best part of a stone.
"I think seven furlongs is probably a bit too far for him and we will come back to six with him now.
"The horse has bags of speed. He jumped out in front and then didn't have any cover.
"He is in the Stewards' Cup. We will see how he comes out of this race."
Paddy Power have left Something unchanged at 12/1 for the Stewards' Cup (Goodwood, August 4) while King Of Argus is 12/1 from 14/1 for the totesport Mile with the same firm.
Race 4 - Darley July Cup
SUPERB SAKHEE'S SECRET SCORCHES TO DARLEY JULY CUP JOY
Three-year-old Sakhee's Secret took the Darley July Cup with a brilliant display in what was his first ever Group race.
A Listed winner at Salisbury on his last start, he showed dazzling toe to scorch home by half-a-length from Dutch Art. The win was trainer Hughie Morrison's second in Europe's richest sprint race inside two years – Pastoral Pursuits was victorious in 2005 on the July Course.
Morrison said: "You can never quite believe that they are that good when they have only won at Listed race level. It is quite a performance to go up four grades. Steve (Drowne) said he had to take a pull after 100 yards – the horse has got much so much toe. Then 100 yards out, he was worried before the horse ran on again.
"It is a fantastic team effort. Everyone has worked incredibly hard. Bob Mottram rides him out every day. He also rode Dayjur and Pastoral Pursuits and is incredibly dedicated.
"The horse is in everything – the Nunthorpe and he will be put in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock. The speed he shows you would not be frightened coming back to five. I would not be frightened about going seven furlongs. I need to watch the race again properly. But he has had a very hard race and perhaps we ought to give him a holiday.
"There will come a point when the horse goes to stud. He is an exceptional horse with a great temperament and is good looking. He has speed and stamina in his pedigree – a great mix for people. I suppose the phone won't stop ringing."
"The owner Miss Swire is a big supporter of British racing. She has been half-paralysed since she was very young and finds it hard to get out and about. But she was watching at home with Toby Balding. This is a brilliant result for her."
Winning jockey Steve Drowne said: "He is up there with the best if not the best I have ridden. He is very strong and will only get better. The others in the race were all veterans – this was his first skirmish.
"It was lovely. He gave me a great ride and he's done everything for me. I think he'll improve again for this and get even better.
"He just had to wait for a gap. He's travelled but when you've got a horse under you like this you've got the engine to get in the holes and he did everything for me.
"I've always had a lot of faith that he's got the ability. He's just a three-year-old and he's an inexperienced three-year-old. He's a youngster and luckily enough he had the guns for them He's alright isn't he. He's as good as I've ridden."
CHAPPLE-HYAM LEFT TO WONDER - HILLS SATISFIED
Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam was left wondering what might have been after Dutch Art went down by half-a-length to Sakhee's Secret in the Group One Darley July Cup.
The Newmarket handler said of the 5/1 chance: "I don't know what happened.
"Jimmy (Fortune) said he got squeezed out and then the horse has finished like a train.
"I think we may look at the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville for him now."
A further length and a quarter back in third was Red Clubs and his trainer Barry Hills was very satisfied.
The Lambourn trainer said: "He has run a good race and is a very consistent horse.
"At the end of this season, he is off to the Tally-Ho Stud (Co Westmeath,
Ireland) and before that his programme will hopefully be York (Nunthorpe Stakes), Haydock (Betfred Sprint Cup) and Longchamp (Prix de l'Abbaye) - he is up to it.
"The winner is a good horse and so is the second. We have come out of the race as the best older horse.
"I thought we might win a furlong out."
BENTLEY BISCUIT MAY STAY FOR BETFRED SPRINT CUP
Australian raider Bentley Biscuit, who finished 10th under Ryan Moore in the Darley July Cup, may stay in Europe for another couple of months after running well for a long way.
His trainer Gai Waterhouse said: "I couldn't have been happier with Bentley Biscuit. Ryan said he ran an enormous race and he would love to ride him at Haydock or beforehand.
"He said he thought he was on the winner before the horse blew up in the closing stages and was just feeling the ground a little bit.
"Bentley Biscuit is booked to go back to Australia, going into quarantine on August 4, but we might change our plans.
"I am going to have discussions with Mr Mooratoff (joint owner with the
trainer) shortly."
The Haydock Park race is the six-furlong Betfred Sprint Cup on September 8.
Another overseas challenger, the South African-trained Drayton, was a place behind in 11th after leading for a significant portion of the race.
His rider Weichong Marwing commented: "He travelled really well until I had to apply real pressure when he was just flat footed.
"He hasn't won for a while and may be lacking in a bit of confidence at the moment."

Race 5 - Xplor EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes - Winning Quotes
GALE'S STUNNING DEBUT
Laureldean Gale made a very professional debut to land the Xplor EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes under Jimmy Fortune.
The two-year-old Grand Slam filly stayed on well to take up the running in the final furlong and score by a length and a half from Kashoof.
Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said of the 2/1 favourite: "She is a very nice filly and we have always thought a lot of her. I think she is the best two year-old-filly in the yard.
"She will stay well and improve for this run.
"We will step her up now, although I don't know where she will run next."
The bookmakers were certainly very impressed with Laureldean Gale and quote her at 14/1 (Ladbrokes), 16/1 (Stan James) and 20/1 (Stan James and Paddy
Power) for the 2007 Stan James 1000 Guineas,
Looking back on Dutch Art's second place in the Darley July Cup, Chapple-Hyam added: "Dutch Art will go to Deauville for the Prix Maurice de Gheest. He won there last year (Prix Morny) - he likes the lagoustines and so do I.
"We will then probably come back and take on Sakhee's Secret in the Haydock Sprint Cup."
SIXTH RACE - WIN AND PLACE QUOTES
VERSATILE DAN TUCKET PROVES HIMSELF AT SEVEN FURLONGS
Dan Tucket took the next step up the ladder when landing this competitive seven-furlong nursery today.
The Dansili colt was already a maiden winner, having bagged a Folkestone race over five furlongs, and was then out of the frame twice.
But this afternoon he proved that he was more than just a sharp early type when triumphing by half-a-length.
Tom Corby, racing manager to the successful Box 41 syndicate, said: "The further he went, the better he went. And he will be better over a mile.
"He is not very big but he has the perfect temperament and the keys to him are the trip and the ground.
"He is just so genuine and honest. He puts every ounce into everything he does."
Winning trainer Mick Channon said: "He is a bonny little horse and has done nothing wrong. He did it well. I'm sure that he will get further."
Trainer Clive Brittain said of the runner-up Al Muheer: "He's done everything right and has run a nice race.
"We haven't had the best of luck this week – a couple of my horses nearly got knocked over - but the horses are running well and I'm sure the winners will come along soon."
Race 7 - Egerton House Stables - Winning Quotes
TERRY BACK IN WINNER'S ENCLOSURE
John Terry was in the winner's enclosure for the first time since his debut success at Leicester in May, 2005, after he collected the Egerton House Stables Handicap, the final race of the 2007 Ritz Club July Festival.
The four-year-old, a 16/1 chance, was prominent throughout the 12-furlong contest and stayed on with determination to hold off the late challenge of
2/1 favourite Samurai Way by a short-head.
Trainer Amanda Perrett was not present but her husband Mark said: "That was the first time Johnny Murtagh has ridden the horse for a while.
"Johnny gets on really well with this horse and has given him a great ride.
The horse takes a bit of knowing.
"I don't know where he will go next but hopefully we can build on that now.
"It was nice to get his head back in front today."
STEWARDS SLAP BAN ON KINANE
Mick Kinane faces an enforced break after the stewards suspended him for failing to ride out his mount Feared In Flight – beaten into sixth place - in the Weatherby-sponsored Superlative Stakes.
The jockey was called before the stewards, who asked him why he appeared to drop his hands shortly before the winning post.
They heard his evidence and then found him to be in breach of Rule 156 (i) in that he failed to ride out for fifth place. Kinane's suspension runs from 24-25 July (inclusively).
HUGHES FINED OVER WEIGHING OUT ISSUE
Richard Hughes has been hit with a fine over a bit of boot bother.
On a report from the clerk of the scales that Hughes - the rider of Mr Aviator in the Ritz Club Handicap – had changed his boots, the stewards interviewed him and, not being satisfied with his explanation, fined him £275 under HRA Instruction F2 headed ‘Weighing Out'.

FOLLOW-UP: TNT JULY STAKES
WINKER IN FINE FETTLE AFTER TNT JULY STAKES TRIUMPH
Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam today confirmed that Winker Watson is likely to be next seen out in the Darley Prix Morny.
Yesterday's TNT July Stakes winner looks set to follow in the hoofprints of stable-mate Dutch Art, who landed the Deauville Group 1 last August.
The unbeaten Winker Watson is in good order after his latest heroics – he pipped River Proud by a short head – and the plan is to head across the Channel for the Morny on August 19.
Chapple-Hyam said: "Everything is perfect with him this morning – there are no problems whatsoever. We'll likely head to the Morny next.
"Winker Watson is definitely as good at this stage as Dutch Art was last year. He has got that turn of foot and has plenty of guts. He also possesses marvellous cruising speed.
"Yesterday the draw was totally against us but he still managed to win. He is a serious horse."
BETTING NEWS:
SANDER PLUNGE
