Newmarket Steps Up Its Recycling Efforts
Tuesday 22nd May, 2007
NEWMARKET Racecourses, in conjunction with caterers Letheby & Christopher, have stepped up their recycling efforts this season, with cardboard and glass recycling now a key part of the raceday operation.
"We sent 1.44 tonnes of glass for recycling as a result of Friday's and Saturday's racing which was about half of all our 'waste' and would have gone to a land-fill site in the past," said Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses.
"We have a very pro-active team ensuring that all aspects of our operation are as environmentally-friendly as possible, from making sure our staff turn off lights, computers and other office appliances when not in use, to recycling wherever possible.
"Jan Scott's letter in Sunday's Racing Post highlighted very clearly the carbon footprint which racing leaves and it is absolutely essential that every organisation involved in the sport does everything it can to minimise the negative effect on the environment. We will certainly be looking to introduce new initiatives here at Newmarket wherever possible in the future."
