Finsceal Beo Tops 70 in Stan James 1000 Guineas
Wednesday 21st March, 2007

FINSCEAL Beo, rated the top juvenile filly in Europe last season, heads a 70-strong entry for the £350,000 Stan James 1000 Guineas, run at Newmarket on Sunday, May 6, 2007.
The daughter of Mr Greeley, trained by Jim Bolger in Ireland, was mightily impressive when recording a five-length success in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac Royal Barriere de Deauville at Longchamp, and ended her two-year-old campaign with a decisive victory in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket on October 14, defeating Rahiyah by three lengths.
She received plenty of plaudits at the end of last season, including the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly award, and is 7/2 joint favourite with the sponsors to win the Stan James 1000 Guineas.
Rahiyah’s trainer, Jeremy Noseda, looks to hold a strong hand in the Newmarket Classic, having also entered the other 7/2 joint favourite, Sander Camillo, who spreadeagled the opposition in the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket in July, and Simply Perfect, victorious in the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Ascot on her final outing last season, beating Treat by a length and a half, with English Ballet three quarters of a length away in third.
Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O’Brien, who hit the bullseye with Virginia Waters in 2005, is responsible for six entries, including Theann, fifth to the Richard Hannon-trained Indian Ink in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket last term, and the beautifully bred but unraced Cherry Hinton, a daughter of 1993 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea and a half-sister to 2001 Epsom Derby hero Galileo.
Successful with the brilliant Cape Verdi in 1998 and Kazzia four years later, Godolphin has two contenders in Measured Tempo, who made a bright start to her racing career when taking a Newmarket maiden by three lengths in October, and Malaath, victorious at the first time of asking on the Polytrack at Lingfield the same month.
It is 27 years since Quick As Lightning gave John Dunlop his first Stan James 1000 Guineas winner - he has landed the mile Classic three times in all - and Group Three Princess Margaret Stakes victor Scarlet Runner features among three possible runners for the Arundel trainer this year.
Sir Michael Stoute has taken the fillies’ Classic twice previously and could bid for a third victory with Shorthand and Kaseema, fourth and seventh respectively to Finsceal Beo in the Rockfel Stakes when last seen, while fellow Newmarket trainer Clive Brittain also has two Stan James 1000 Guineas wins to his name and his three entries include Darrfonah, runner-up behind Finsceal Beo in the Prix Marcel Boussac Royal Barriere de Deauville.
French handler Criquette Head-Maarek has captured the Stan James 1000 Guineas on three occasions and is represented by Magic America, sixth to Indian Ink in the Cheveley Park Stakes before landing the Group Three Prix Miesque at Maisons-Laffitte, and Green Lyons, a six-length winner on heavy ground at the same track in November. Freddie Head - successful as a jockey on his sister’s Ma Biche (1983) and Miesque (1987) - has entered debut scorer Rakiza and Nuqoosh.
Other fascinating entries include the Brian Meehan-trained Rainbow Promises, a facile winner on her debut on Lingfield’s Polytrack in October. The daughter of Came Home barely came out of second gear to score by five lengths from Laura’s Best - in the process taking nearly half a second off the juvenile course record for six furlongs - and has been backed into 10/1 with the sponsors to add Classic glory to her CV.
Miss Beatrix, from the Kevin Prendergast stable, just got the better of Mick Channon’s Silca Chiave in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in August, Arch Swing, trained by John Oxx, landed both starts last season at the Curragh in good style, while Marco Botti’s Sesmen looked a filly to follow when taking the Group Three Prestige Stakes at Goodwood in August.
The Stan James 1000 Guineas takes place over the NatWest Rowley Mile on the second day of the Stan James Guineas Festival, Sunday, May 6. Supplementary entries may be made at the six-day confirmation stage on April 30, at a cost of £25,000.
Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Director of Racing, commented: "Last year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas was truly memorable thanks to Speciosa’s victory and I am sure that this year’s renewal will be equally thrilling.
"Finsceal Beo and Sander Camillo both looked potential world-beaters when scoring at Newmarket last season and it will be fantastic to see them go head to head on the NatWest Rowley Mile on May 6."
Stan James betting - 7/2 Finsceal Beo, Sander Camillo, 10/1 Rainbow Promises, 16/1 Miss Beatrix, Simply Perfect, 20/1 Arch Swing, Indian Ink, Rahiyah, 25/1 bar
