Prize Money
Prize money at Newmarket has risen dramatically in the 21st century, from £5.7m in 2001 when the current management team took over, to a projected £9.2m in 2008
Newmarket has more Pattern and Listed Races than any other racecourse in Britain and funding such a high class race programme requires a huge investment.

Whilst a significant part of the money comes from the Levy Board, who divide up racing’s share of betting turnover amongst the courses, Newmarket makes its own very large contribution, partly by bringing in sponsors and partly from its own funds.
“It is absolutely vital that we keep pushing up our prize money if we are to continue to attract the best horses to run here, thereby allowing us to stage some of the best flat racing in the world,” explains Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Director of Racing.
“We have made some very significant improvements to our race programme over the last few years, all of which have necessitated individual prize money increases. It is therefore essential that we keep bringing in more sponsorship, attract bigger crowds and maximise all our revenue streams in order to fund our prize money to the desired level.
"2008 prize money sees a massive increase thanks to the two Tattersalls Millions two-year-old sales races which will be run on totesport Cambridgeshire Day, Saturday 4 October. This will now be the most valuable day's racing ever staged in Britain - another glittering jewel in Newmarket's racing crown.
“As one of the 14 Jockey Club Racecourses, which all have ‘Trust’ status, any surpluses that we make are reinvested in prize money and facilities. We exist solely to stage top class flat racing at this most historic of venues for the benefit of all those who love our sport.”
