The QIPCO Guineas Festival
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th May 2012
If you appreciate world class sport and events that really matter, this is a weekend to savour.
All winter, the racing world has been anticipating these two momentous days when superstar status may be bestowed upon the winners of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and QIPCO 1000 Guineas, the first two Classics of the British season and the most important spring races in Europe.
These two outstanding mile contests launch the QIPCO British Champions Series which links together the top 35 races in the British Flat racing calendar.
This is when reputations are put on the line in no uncertain terms and a victory can secure a champion’s status forever.
Take last year’s QIPCO 2000 Guineas (open to three-year-old colts - fillies can also run, but very rarely do so). The peerless Frankel, who has the potential to be the greatest racehorse of all time, put up the most destructive piece of front-running ever witnessed in a major race.
The Newmarket-trained colt had it won by halfway, galloping his rivals into submission with a performance of powerful athleticism and supreme brilliance. It simply took the breath away.
The big question now - can one of this year’s contenders produce a display of similarly seismic proportions?
In the 2011 QIPCO 1000 Guineas for three-year-old fillies only, Blue Bunting won in a totally contrasting manner to Frankel, coming from right at the back of the field to take the lead only in the dying strides of the race.
Like Frankel, she subsequently registered other big victories, proving that her coronation on the historic turf of the Rowley Mile “Course of Champions” was utterly deserved.
Will the 2012 QIPCO Guineas Festival king and queen captivate the big Newmarket crowd in similar style?
All will soon be revealed. With seven top class races each day, this is a sporting occasion to set your pulse racing from the moment you arrive until the moment you depart. Don’t miss it!
