The Piper Heidsieck July Festival is the region’s most stylish summer event, with racegoers donning their finest clothes to complement and enhance the unique garden party atmosphere. The best dressed can win an array of fantastic prizes if they enter ‘Fashion On The Field’.
Spectacular outfits and hats are everywhere to be seen in and around the grandstands, on the sun-kissed lawns and around the picturesque parade ring. Out on the track, meanwhile, some of the finest thoroughbreds from around the globe compete for their share of approximately £1.2m of prize money and the ultimate glory in some of the European summer’s top races.
The racing is top class every day, with the peaks coming on day two (Friday) and day three (Saturday), when the biggest races are staged.
Abu Dhabi Day on Friday features the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes, run over a mile and one of the season’s top races for three-year-old fillies and their elders.
This exceptional day also features the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes, a key race for two-year-old fillies, and the Abu Dhabi Harwood International Arabian Racing Stakes, one of the most important races for Purebred Arabian horses run in this country.
Saturday takes the excitement up one final notch with the running of the Festival’s glittering centerpiece, the Darley July Cup.
Europe’s premier sprint race is a scintillating six furlong contest that many of the world’s fastest thoroughbreds target, with victory often determining the identity of Europe’s sprinting champion.
The opening Thursday is Ladies Day, when the Princess of Wales’s Stakes is the feature race on another strong afternoon of racing.
The magical trees, the immaculate lawns, the warm sunshine (we hope!), the atmospheric bars and restaurants, the stunning outfits and eye-catching hats, the magnificent thoroughbreds and the electric buzz of the betting ring....all play their part in making the Piper Heidsieck July Festival a veritable summer treat and an event that is gloriously and quintessentially British.
The Piper Heidsieck July Festival is also the focal point of a wider Newmarket Festival which sees a broad range of events taking place in and around the town.
