The Cambridgeshire Meeting
Thursday 27th, Friday 28th & Saturday 29th September
The Rowley Mile, “Course of Champions”, will be the scene for three of the finest racedays of the year when it hosts the historic Cambridgeshire Meeting, now staged in late September.
It’s an occasion to be enthralled and excited by the quality and drama of the world class racing action and to be seduced by the unique and utterly authentic experience of attending a great sporting event at the historic Home of Racing.
With three Group 1s - the highest class of race – alongside one Group 2 race and three Group 3 races, the quality of the meeting is exceptional. Add in the stunning spectacle that is the Betfred Cambridgeshire, one of British racing’s most famous handicaps, and you have all the ingredients for three unbeatable days of sport on Newmarket’s world famous turf.
Thursday’s racing highlight is the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes, a seven-furlong contest for two-year-olds. This race has been won by many fine horses, including Grand Lodge and Milk It Mick, who both went on to win the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.
Friday sees the action crank up a notch with the running of the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile, which moved from Ascot to Newmarket in 2011, on a card packed with other high class races plus the ultra competitive Silver Cambridgeshire Handicap for horses that didn’t make the field for Saturday’s big race. A string of outstanding two-year-old fillies have won the Shadwell Fillies Mile in the past, several on their way to Classic glory the following year, including champions Bosra Sham and Reams of Verse.
Saturday is better still, however, with what is unquestionably one of the highest class and most pulsating racedays of the year. As well as the drama of the Betfred Cambridgeshire, when more than 30 horses will hurtle up the Rowley Mile track in search of a headline-making victory, there are two stunning Group 1 events, the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes for older fillies over a mile and the Cheveley Park Stakes, a race that often identifies Europe’s best two-year-old filly over six furlongs.
As if that was not enough, there is also the Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes which was won by the brilliant Frankel in 2010.
The Cambridgeshire Meeting has always been one of the jewels in Newmarket’s crown and the changes made to its programme in 2011 have made it glitter even more brightly. Make sure you don’t miss it!
Don’t forget – accompanied children under the age of 18 are admitted FREE to all enclosures at Newmarket on every raceday except the Adnams Newmarket Nights and Summer Saturday's Live. On Cambridgeshire Saturday there will also be lots of free children’s entertainments, so it’s a great opportunity to bring the whole family along.
