Laajooj scores under Mikael Barzalona

QIPCO 1000 Guineas-winning trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni continued his fine run of form with a double courtesy of Laajooj (11/1) and Maywood (8/1).

Laajooj could next be seen at Royal Ascot following his smooth success in the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Fairway Stakes under French-sensation Mikael Barzalona.

The son of Azamour raced with Buthelezi on the far side but was left alone when that rival hung across the track. He stayed on strongly under Barzalona’s drive to score by a length and three quarters.

Al Zarooni said: “He’s done it nicely and should hopefully stay further. We’ll aim him at Royal Ascot and take a look – it’s a big ask but we’ll give it a try.

Earlier in the afternoon Barzalona produced Maywood late on the scene to take the TurfTV handicap. The son of Cape Cross ran on strongly up the stands rail to collar the highly-regarded Dubai Queen by a length and a half.

Al Zarooni added: “He is a nice handicapper who has plenty of options. We may look at something at Royal Ascot for him.”

Majestic Myles battled on gamely to land the valuable coral.co.uk Sprint under Jack Mitchell. The Richard Fahey-trained gelding travelled strongly throughout and pulled out more when challenged by Desert Law to win by a neck.

A delighted Mitchell said: “He travelled very well and was really game when he hit the front. I probably got there too soon so he did well to win. He should be capable of a step up in grade.”

The La Hogue Farm Shop & Cafe handicap went the way of 9/2 chance Huygens for trainer Denis Coakley and jockey Eddie Ahern.

The Zafeen gelding hit the front over a furlong from home and surged clear to win by a length and three quarters.

Coakley said: “We fancied him but were worried that he might not stay. But he stayed the trip well and we shall look for another mile and a quarter handicap for him now.”

The formidable combination of trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes landed another two-year-old race when Democretes won the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF maiden.

The 14/1 shot looked to have come on from his debut here earlier in the month and benefitted from a step up to six furlongs.

Richard Hannon Jnr, assistant to his father, said: “He has come on a huge amount for his first run and is a very straightforward horse.”

Rave (7/4F) got off the mark at the third time of asking in the Racing UK maiden. The John Hills-trained colt was second over course and distance last time out and had little trouble in going one better this afternoon under Seb Sanders.

Leading National Hunt trainer Nicky Henderson enhanced his tremendous record on the flat when Veiled (9/2JF) took the finale, the newmarketracecourses.co.uk handicap in the hands of Kieren Fallon.

Newmarket Nights return to the July Course on Friday 17 June.
