I Love Me lands feature for Balding
I LOVE Me was a shock 50/1 winner of the £200,000 Tattersalls Millions Auction Trophy for trainer Andrew Balding and jockey Kirsty Milczarek.
The daughter of Cape Cross was making her racecourse debut but showed no signs of inexperience and was always in a handy position.
She always travelled strongly and went on to score in fine-style by a length and a half from the running-on favourite, Sir Reginald.
She was purchased for 45,000guineas by owner Nevan Botica and will now be aimed at the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Fillies’ Trophy, here on October 2.
A delighted Milczarek said: “She broke well and showed good speed. I think she would have pulled out more if one had come to her.”
Balding, who was not at the track, added: “That was great. She will now go for the next Tattersalls Fillies’ race which was her original target.”
There was a thrilling finish to the 2m2f Investec Cesarewitch Trial Stakes which saw the Mark Tompkins-trained Theola land the spoils.
The daughter of Kalanisi, a 7/1 chance, got up in the final furlong under Jimmy Quinn and surged clear to win by two and a half lengths.
Going into the final two furlongs there were many still in with a chance but it was Tompkins’ charge that came out on top, earning quotes of 14/1 for the totesport.com Cesarewitch on October 16.
Tompkins said: “She’s in the Cesarewitch and with a 4lb penalty I hope she will get in. The further she goes the better she is.
“We just put the visor on to help her concentrate and it worked. If she runs in the Cesarewitch we’ll leave it on.”
Spoken landed the spoils for trainer Roger Charlton and jockey Jim Crowley in the extremely competitive £16,000 Phumelela Gold Enterprises handicap.
Crowley led a group of three who stayed on the far-side and victory never looked in doubt for the 20/1 chance.
He said: “It was common sense from my draw (14) to stay on the far-side. He has done it nicely although he drifted towards the others under pressure.”
Calatrava Cape gained her second win of the season in the Cape Premier Yearling Sale EBF Fillies’ handicap for trainer John Dunlop and jockey Tom Queally.
The 3/1 chance travelled like a good thing throughout but idled slightly on hitting the front and just held on from Roxy Flyer by a length.
Queally said: “She pulled up when she hit the front but was by far the best horse in the race. I would have liked to have been handier but they went a very good gallop.”
The Peter Makin-trained Kuanyao (3/1) completed a six-timer when taking the Bloodstock South Africa handicap in the hands of George Baker.
The son of American Post started his winning sequence off a rating of 61, taking this off 84. He still looks to be improving and won with a bit in hand over Swiss Cross.
The winning jockey said: “That’s the first time I have ridden him but he’s done it nicely. They’ve done a good job with him and they have to be good to win six.
“If the handicapper isn’t too harsh him he could win again as he is very progressive.”
Baker completed a double on the Chris Wall-trained Kindest (9/4JF) in division one of the Racing South Africa handicap.
The second division went the way of the Michael Jarvis-trained Parvaaz (5/1) who was completing a three-timer under Philip Robinson.
The Betting World Claimer was won by Spirit Is Needed(15/8) for trainer Mark Johnston and jockey Joe Fanning.
Day one of the Cambridgeshire Meeting kicks off on Thursday, September 30.
