Admiral Barry aiming to have all guns blazing in totesport.com Cesarewitch

Irish handler Eoin Griffin is hopeful that Admiral Barry can continue his excellent form on the Flat with victory in the £160,000 totesport.com Cesarewitch after the five-year-old was allotted 8st 5lb for the prestigious two and a quarter mile heritage handicap at Newmarket on Champions’ Day, Saturday, 16th October.

The John Brennan-owned gelding, a 20/1 chance with totesport, has been rejuvenated this season following a change in his training regime and is yet to finish out of the frame in six starts, including when posting a staying-on success in a valuable two-mile handicap for amateurs at the Galway Festival at the end of July.

The Kalanisi five-year-old warmed up for Newmarket with a creditable third over an inadequate mile and three-quarters in a Killarney handicap on 18th August.

Griffin revealed: “The plan is for Admiral Barry to head straight to Newmarket for the totesport.com Cesarewitch. I would be happy enough to run him off 8st 5lb - I thought that it might be touch and go whether he would get in but he is a definite runner as things stand.

“He is in good order at the moment and the race at Killarney was a little bit on the short side for him - they quickened past him and all he did was stay on. We would be hopeful that he could run a big race at Newmarket off a nice weight on decent ground.

“He has completely transformed this season and we have changed the way we train him. He swims a lot now and we don’t put the saddle on him too often. He is living out in a field with a mare and he is as happy as larry.

“There is going to be a time when the handicapper really gets hold of him but I am not sure when that will be. He was a horse that we always thought highly of and he was a big disappointment on the Flat and over hurdles, so he is only just starting to show that ability now.”

Three horses currently head the market at 12/1 for the totesport.com Cesarewitch with the race sponsor, including the Alan King-trained Manyriverstocross (8st 13lb), who landed a handicap at Glorious Goodwood last year before going on to post a Grade Two victory over hurdles.

Nicky Henderson, who has enjoyed success in the totesport.com Cesarewitch with Landing Light (2003) and Caracciola (2008), is responsible for the two other co-favourites. Ghimaar (8st 11lb) triumphed in the marathon Goodwood Handicap, while leading hurdler Sentry Duty (9st 3lb) may also remain on the level after taking third in another handicap at Goodwood. The Lambourn trainer has also entered Tasheba (8st & 16/1), another who boasts high-class form over hurdles.

The Gary Moore-trained Bergo (14/1) heads the weights on 9st 10lb following two excellent efforts this term, scoring in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot and going down by a short-head in a Listed contest at Goodwood on Saturday.

Dermot Weld sent over subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Vintage Crop to take the spoils in 1992 and the County Kildare handler may be represented by Majestic Concorde (9st 2lb & 14/1), who was fourth in this year’s totesport.com Chester Cup, and the unexposed pair of Universal Truth (8st 1lb & 14/1) and Easy Mate (8st 1lb & 25/1).

A quartet of entries from Sir Mark Prescott includes Motrice (8st 5lb & 14/1) and Fortuni (8st 10lb & 25/1), while recent Listed scorer Lady Eclair (8st 12lb & 14/1) features among five remaining entries for Mark Johnston, who saddled Spirit Of Love (1998) and Contact Dancer (2004) to totesport.com Cesarewitch glory.

Other notable contenders include last year’s Investec Cesarewitch Trial Handicap scorer Bernie The Bolt (8st 13lb & 14/1), representing Andrew Balding, the Alan Swinbank-trained Merchant Of Dubai (9st 2lb & 16/1), and Darley Sun (9st 5lb & 16/1), who joined the Godolphin operation after storming to a five-length victory in last year’s race for David Simcock. The maximum permitted field for the totesport.com Cesarewitch is 34.
