FRANKIE Dettori and Richard Hannon scooped the respective Champagne Lanson July Festival jockey and trainer awards.

The ever popular Dettori pipped weighing-room colleague Richard Hughes by a point to the riders’ gong.

In the final race the Italian finished second on Bay Willow while Hughes’ mount could only end up fourth and that ultimately proved the difference.

Dettori nailed two successes on Corsica and St Moritz but collected further points with three seconds and three thirds over the duration of the meeting.

Hughes could take plenty of satisfaction from a brilliant three days in which he notched up four winners.

The trainers’ crown was a landslide success for Hannon. He racked up 61 points, 23 more than second-placed Mark Johnston.

Hannon’s tally was based on his terrific two-year-old team, who scooped three major prizes and also secured two other wins.

Overall, Newmarket Racecourses were rewarded with a significant crowd increase for the meeting compared to last year’s figures.

The total attendance was touching on an increase of 2000 with each of the daily returns also up.
