Aidan's 'Star' wins Darley July Cup

STARSPANGLED Banner (pictured far side) confirmed that he is the sprint king with a blistering display in the Group 1 Darley July Cup.

The Aidan O’Brien trained colt bagged a second successive leg of the Global Sprint Challenge triumphantly following on from his victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Just as he did at the Berkshire track, the imposing chestnut colt raced next to a rail and went about his stuff in purposeful and exhilarating fashion.

He was kept company on the front end through much of the closing strides by King’s Stand hero Equiano and 66/1 outsider Alverta.

But in the end the 2/1 favourite was able to sustain his dazzling burst of speed for that bit longer than those two rivals and he prevailed by a neck from Equiano.

It was the third time O’Brien had won the race after the victories of Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001).
