Richard Hughes today donated his £1,000 cheque for winning the Racing UK-sponsored Leading Jockey Award at Glorious Goodwood to the Newmarket Youths Football Club.
The in-form jockey received his cheque from Racing UK’s Rishi Persad following the EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at Newmarket.
The team is in dire need of funding and their manager Dave Cahill, along with some of the players, was on hand to receive Hughes’s valued donation.
The jockey explained: “Willie McKeon is a good friend of mine and he’s involved with the team, who are struggling to keep going.
“They are all under 14s and football is an important part of these kids’ lives and encourages team and community spirit, and keeps the kids honest. It would be a crying shame if they couldn’t carry on.”
Newmarket Racecourses was also delighted with the success of today’s raceday, designated Seniors Day.
Over 1,000 senior citizens took up the chance of free admission to the eight-race card.
They were also offered free tea and coffee, generously sponsored by racehorse and stud owner Bill Gredley, who is a strong supporter of Seniors Day at Newmarket’s July Course.
