Music Show takes Nell Gwyn
Music Show (above, right) enhanced her credentials for the 1000 Guineas with a smooth win in the Group Three Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon.
Jaber Abdullah’s filly had to concede three pounds all round for her win in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes last season but it failed to stop her from taking this prestigious trial.
Jockey Kieren Fallon settled the daughter of Noverre in the midfield on the rails. At halfway he was forced to switch her to the outside to ensure a trrouble-free passage and when in the clear she picked up well and hit the front with a furlong to go.
The main danger in the closing stages came courtesy of Blue Maiden but Music Show stuck to her task well to win by half a length.
Winning trainer Mick Channon said: “She did what she did in the Rockfel. I am very pleased with that.
“She’s gone a bit lazy at home and I wanted to get a run into her and I’m sure we did the right thing.
“I knew she’d done enough work but we didn’t want to gallop her again and again at home so we thought we’d come here. She’s got a lot of class.
“When she got shuffled back on the inside Kieren didn’t mess about, he switched her to the outside and the rest is history.”
