Tregoning mulls options
Lambourn trainer Marcus Tregoning is considering a tilt at the first leg of the Autumn Double, the £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire(3.40pm) at Newmarket on Saturday 3rd October, with recent Doncaster winner Mawatheeq (9st 6lb).
Available at 14/1 with totesport, Mawatheeq is one of 100 entries remaining at the scratching stage for the historic nine-furlong handicap, which is one of the highlights of the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting - Thursday, 1st October to Saturday, 3rd October.
A maximum field of 35 runners can line up for the totesport.com Cambridgeshire.
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Danzig colt was racing for only the sixth time when catching the eye at the St Leger Festival last week with a comfortable 10-furlong handicap victory; his first start since April.
Tregoning revealed today: "We haven’t decided yet so I can’t say that he will definitely be going for the totesport.com Cambridgeshire. He does have a few options and the Newmarket race is one of them.
"He is a good horse and, on a good day, when he gets it right and when we get it right, he’s a talented individual. He would be a force in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire if he goes there on the day, but we will have to see.
"He has had problems so he hasn’t had a lot of racing but he has come out of the Doncaster race well."
The sponsor’s current joint market leaders, the David Barron-trained Sirvino (9st 1lb) and the Walter Swinburn-trained three-year-old Antinori (8st 7lb), remain and are available at 10/1.
The David Simcock-trained Bushman (9st 2lb) and Applause (8st 2lb) from the Jeremy Noseda stable are both 14/1 shots, while the Ed Dunlop-trained Broomielaw (8st 9lb), a 16/1 chance, could line up for Lady Ferguson, wife of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Noseda could also saddle Royal Destination, successful in a 10-furlong York handicap on 18th August, who is also available at 14/1 with totesport.
A quintet remains from the yard of Sir Michael Stoute, headed by 16/1 hopes Dancourt (8st 3lb) and Tryst (8st 4lb). The others are Lang Shining (8st 11lb), Mirrored (8st 10lb) and Desert Creek (8st 6lb).
The David Lanigan-trained Wannabe King (8st 8lb) completed a hat-trick at Ripon on 31st August and is another on 16/1 with the sponsor.
John Gosden saddled Pipedreamer (2007) and Tazeez (2008) to win the last two renewals and he could be represented by16/1 shot Invisible Man (8st 4lb) and Charm School (8st 9lb).
The Gary Moore-trained Bankable is top-weight with 10st, while the Jim Goldie-trained Nanton (9st 2lb) could attempt the remarkable feat of winning the Autumn Double. The seven-year-old grey is also entered in the two and a quarter-mile totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket, having landed the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster on 11th September.
Group One winner Zafisio, from the Roger Curtis stable, finished third to Border Patrol in a Curragh Group Three on 13th September and has been allotted 9st 7lb.
Other notables include the Luca Cumani-trained Swop (9st 5lb), Axiom (9st) and Riggins (8st 10lb), Bon Spiel (8st 7lb) and Authentic (8st 3lb), as well as the Andrew Balding-trained Brief Encounter (8st 10lb), Docofthebay (8st 11lb) from the Jamie Osborne stable and the John Dunlop-trained Perks (9st 4lb), owned by Benny Andersson of Abba fame.
