Seek out future stars at finale

NEWMARKET’S final meeting of the year takes place on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st October and race-goers can expect to see plenty of future stars over the two days judged on recent renewals.

Just 12 months ago the second division of the bet365-sponsored fillies’ maiden saw a winning debut display from none other than Sariska, subsequent dual Oaks heroine. The first division also threw up a stakes-class filly in Apple Charlotte, who won in Listed grade in 2009.

The two-day fixture has a well-earned reputation for being a hot-bed for untapped talent with Group 1 horses such as Passage Of Time and Ouija Board having appeared in past renewals of the Casino At bet365.com EBF Montrose Fillies’ Stakes, which will be staged on Saturday.

The 2007 meeting, in particular, surpassed itself in showcasing the stars of tomorrow with subsequent Group-1 winners Paco Boy, Twice Over and Dar Re Mi in action. Infallible and Tartan Bearer also took their respective racecourse bows.

Newmarket’s Director of Racing Michael Prosser said: “Newmarket’s final meeting of the season is fascinating for those wishing to pinpoint possible stars of the future and also horses to follow. Almost without fail, each year it throws up at least one Group 1 performer in the making.

“It is the perfect way to finish Newmarket’s season as it gives us a chance to see many horses that will be with us again in 2010.”

Prosser also reported that there had been rainfall on the Rowley Mile through the early part of today, but the ground remains good.

He said: “By 11am, there had been 2.4 millimetres of rain. The official going description is good and leading to Friday we are forecast to remain mainly dry with the possibility of a light shower. It is also particularly mild for the time of year with temperatures expected to reach 17 degrees Celsius.”
