HENRY CECIL capped a fine season with a popular win by Timepiece in the the Casino At bet365.com EBF Montrose Fillies’ Stakes as the curtain came down at Newmarket for 2009.
The daughter of Zamindar, a half sister to the Cecil-trained Passage of Time who took this Listed race in 2006, had to dig deep to get the better of Nurture but she stuck to her task and held on by a nose.
Cecil, still glowing from Twice Over’s victory in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, said: “I’m glad she’s won but perhaps she was a little over the top.
“I nearly put her away after her last win but decided to run as she looked so well. The ground was probably also a bit soft for her. There’s definitely more to come.”
Perhaps the most impressive winner on the card was Laaheb, who took the bet365 Jane Seymour Stakes for trainer Michael Jarvis and jockey Richard Hills.
The son of Cape Cross scored by a length from the odds-on favourite Prince Siegfried and has now won on four of his last five starts.
Jarvis, enjoying his second day back on the racecourse since a recent heart operation, said: “He has been very progressive and is one to look forward to.”
Prince of Dance bagged the bet365 Ben Marshall Stakes for trainer Tom Dascombe and jockey Richard Kingscote.
The son of Danehill Dancer retained his unbeaten record, completing a hat-trick of wins as he outbattled Shaweel to win by a head.
A delighted Dascombe said: “This was a great way to finish the year. This horse has only had three runs so he should be better next year and gives us something to look forward to.”
