First Group winner for Teal
STEELE Tango (above) was the 25/1 shock winner of the Group 3 Thurlow Nunn Standen Darley Stakes for trainer Roger Teal and jockey Liam Keniry.
The son of Okawango never got a run in the Arc behind Sea The Stars on his last start but returned home in good form so his trainer decided that he could take his chance today.
Keniry was happy to track the pace set by Supaseus, winner of the totesport.com Cambridgeshire at the last meeting, and his mount relaxed well.
He took up the running with 2f to go and soon put a couple of lengths between himself and the rest of the field.
Glass Harmonium emerged as the greatest danger and actually headed Steele Tango inside the final furlong but it was credit to this horse’s guts that he battled back to record a head success.
Third-season trainer Roger Teal said: “This is my best day in racing so far and what a fantastic ride Liam Keniry gave him.
“That’s my first Group winner and this horse may not have all the talent in the world but he’s got the heart of a lion.”
