Dazzling Darley Sun in famous win
Darley Sun gave trainer David Simcock a high-profile victory on Champions’ Day as he stormed away with the totesport.com Cesarewitch.
The famous staying handicap isn’t often won by a three-year-old but Darley Sun defied the trends with an emphatic success.
Jockey Andrea Atzeni rode the perfect race, allowing Abdullah Saeed Belhab’s horse to settle in mid-division on the inner rail.
Atzeni was content to bide his time on his mount and sure enough the split came approaching The Dip as most began to weaken away.
Darley Sun still had plenty of running left in him and he bounded clear inside the closing stages with five lengths in hand at the line.
Simcock said: “He stays extremely well and that is his greatest asset. He travelled well today and is a good-actioned horse. That is a nice way for him to finish his season.
“Next season he will be aimed at the Cup races with the Ascot Gold Cup his ultimate target. This has been the plan with him since he ran at Salisbury in late June so it is nice that it has come to fruition - it doesn’t happen very often.”
