The Newmarket Nights are back with a bang
The 2009 Newmarket Nights kick off this Friday (19 June) with a fantastic line-up of 80’s favourites from the “Here And Now” Tour performing live after an evening of horseracing on Newmarket’s famous turf.
Paul Young, Belinda Carlisle, Midge Ure, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Curiosity Killed The Cat, T'Pau and Johnny Hates Jazz will be banging out their hits, including “China In Your Hand”, “Shattered Dreams” and “Heaven Is A Place on Earth”. The first race is at 6pm, with the music starting around 9.30pm.
A week later (Friday 26 June), three current British stars, Lemar, Alesha Dixon and Estelle, will each be taking to the stage in what promises to be another sizzling evening when the first race is again at 6pm.
Tickets for both these Newmarket Nights, which are sponsored by Coors in association with Heart FM, are still available and will also be on sale at the gate, so you can turn up even if you do not have ticket.
After a three week gap, the main run of five Nights begins on Friday 17 July with the highest profile act of the season, The Pussycat Dolls, whose appearance was only confirmed last month. When tickets went on sale last month, more sold in the first week than for any previous Newmarket Night in their 22 year history, with over 2000 bought online and by phone. Tickets are still available, but a sell-out in advance is highly likely.
Status Quo follow on 24 July and a week later comes the first Night of the season to sell out so far, Simply Red on 31 July. Scouting For Girls (7 August) and Boyzone (14 August) complete the 2009 series.
“Advance sales for the Newmarket Nights have grown year on year with sell-out crowds of 22,000 now a regular occurrence, but with the economic downturn none of us expected the surge that we saw for The Pussycat Dolls last month,” said Stephen Wallis, Newmarket Racecourses’ Managing Director.
“It was a real coup for us to get The Pussycat Dolls to come to Newmarket. Indeed, someone has told me there’s a rumour going round the area that they’re too big to come to Newmarket, so probably won’t turn up – I can assure everyone that they will!
“Advance sales for the seven Nights as a whole are down on last year’s record-breaking levels, but that reflects what’s happening up and down the country. It means that we may not have as many sell-outs as usual and the message for our first two Nights is that if you come along without a ticket, you will be able to buy one on the gate.
“Simply Red have already sold in July, however, and I will be very surprised if The Pussycat Dolls and possibly Boyzone don’t follow suit, so booking in advance is advisable.”
