Arcano wins the TNT July Stakes

BRIAN Meehan celebrated another high-profile success as Arcano sped to victory in the Group 2 TNT Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon.

The Manton trainer took last month’s Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and today confirmed that he has a strong team of two-year-olds with Arcano justifying 7/4 favouritism.

A winner at 7/2 on his debut at Newbury, he stepped up on that to beat Orpen Grey by three parts of a length with Red Jazz back in third.

Meehan said: “We’ve liked him all the way since he was a yearling. He won first time out which is always a tough call and I would say this was a pretty smart contest today.

“I think there is a lot of improvement in him as he is still babyish. I’m not sure where he will go next, so I’ll sit down and have a discussion with his owners. The Morny comes to mind but I’ll sleep on it.”

Stan James cut him to 16/1 from 33s for next year’s 2000 Guineas, which they sponsor.

Earlier, Kite Wood returned to winning ways when he took the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy. Last seen when well beaten in the Derby this was a much better effort as beat the course record for 1m 5f, delivering by two lengths from Tactic.
