TRAINER Richard Hannon’s hugely successful season continued this afternoon when his Infamous Angel and Penny’s Gift finished first and second in the Thoroughbred Breeder’s Association Lowther Stakes.

The Group 2 contest, transferred to Newmarket after York was forced to abandon its Ebor meeting, still attracted a field of seven high-class fillies including both the Princess Margaret winner African Skies and Cherry Hinton winner Please Sing.

However, it was the Hannon pair that stole the show with Infamous Angel landing the spoils by a short head from her stable-mate.

Sent off an 11/2 shot, the daughter of Exceed and Excel travelled well in midfield under jockey Eddie Ahern. When asked to quicken she showed an impressive turn of foot running on well up the hill to collar long-time leader, Langs Lash.

The trainer’s son and assistant Richard Hannon junior said: “She has improved a lot from her maiden win at Bath and her second in the Super Sprint. She has done very well physically and is getting better as the year goes on.

“She’s not entered but we’ll look at the Cheveley Park as the next target.”

The second, Penny’s Gift, was also doing her best work in the latter stages of the race.

Hannon added: “She is a nice filly as well and was just struggling for toe in the ground which was a bit quick for her. They are two nice fillies.”
