Tattersalls extends Tattersalls Timeform Millions
Wednesday 28th May, 2008
Tattersalls, Europe's leading bloodstock auctioneers, has announced a new six-furlong £250,000 race to be added to the Tattersalls Timeform Millions races which are open to graduates of Book 1 of the 2008 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The race, which will take place at Newmarket's NatWest Rowley Mile Racecourse in September 2009, will be known as the Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint.
The addition will increase the number of races in the Tattersalls Timeform Millions series to four with the total prize money climbing £100,000 to a massive £2,300,000. At the same time the Newmarket-based auctioneers will commit an unprecedented £680,000 to the £2,300,000 prize money while also reducing the owners' entry costs from £10,000 to £6,000.
The £250,000 Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint will be fully funded by Tattersalls, as will the 10-furlong Tattersalls Timeform 3YO Trophy which will have its prize money reduced from £400,000 to £250,000. Prize money for the flagship Tattersalls Timeform Million and Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800, both run over seven furlongs, will remain at £1,000,000 and £800,000 respectively.
Commenting on the changes, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said; "The six- furlong Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint will add an entirely new dimension to the Tattersalls Timeform Millions and will ensure unrivalled opportunities for owners of yearlings purchased at Book 1 of our October Yearling Sale.
"As well as adding a new £250,000 race and more prize money to the series, we have increased our own guaranteed contribution from £275,000 to £680,000 while significantly reducing the owners' entry costs from £10,000 to £6,000.
"No other sales race series comes close to this in terms of value for money for owners. Prize money levels continue to be a major concern and we are delighted to be able to create a series of races which maximise the opportunities for owners to run for huge prize money while keeping their costs down as much as possible."
Racehorse Owners Association President Paul Dixon greeted the news with enthusiasm, saying; "Tattersalls continues to explore new ways in which to provide opportunities for our members and the new race, their increased prize money contribution, as well as the significant reduction in entry costs tick all the boxes as far as owners are concerned.
"We worked closely with Tattersalls in framing the original Tattersalls Millions series and these changes reflect the commitment from Tattersalls to the needs of the industry as a whole."
Michael Prosser, Newmarket Racecourses Director of Racing, said; "Newmarket Racecourses are delighted to further develop their partnership with Tattersalls through the exciting addition of the Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint. It is entirely appropriate that this fantastic series of races is being staged at Newmarket, the home of racing and the home of Tattersalls, whose guaranteed contribution of £680,000 is unprecedented in the history of sales races."
He added: "The new Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint will further enhance the £2,300,000 series. Judging by the large number of entries at the recent forfeit stage for the inaugural races in 2008 and 2009, the Tattersalls Timeform Millions has already caught the imagination of owners and trainers and we are excited by the prospect of hosting what are sure to be competitive and thrilling events."
Book 1 of the 2008 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, sponsored by Betfair, will take place Tuesday 7th - Friday 10th October and is expected to number approximately 750 yearlings.
