Fergie ‘very excited’ about Guineas runner
Friday 2nd May, 2008
SIR ALEX Ferguson would doubtless like to be in two places tomorrow afternoon as his Manchester United tackle West Ham at Old Trafford – and a horse he has a share in runs in the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Title-chasing Man U have a crunch Premiership engagement with the Hammers, which kicks off at 12.45pm.
Then Fireside, owned by a syndicate which includes Ferguson, lines up at 3.25pm in the 200th running of the famous Classic on The NatWest Rowley Mile.
While Fireside is a 20/1 outsider, the 2002 2000 Guineas winner Rock Of Gibraltar carried Ferguson’s silks.
Syndicate manager Harry Herbert said: “Sir Alex is very excited about Saturday’s race. He has such an interest in racing.
“He follows it and studies the form. I took him to Ascot on Wednesday and he was in great form. He backed about four or five winners!”
Fergie’s week can’t get much better after beating Barcelona in the Champions League and then roaring home a few winners at Ascot.
But if Fireside can spring a surprise in the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas, you can guarantee the celebrations won’t just be confined to connections at Newmarket.
