‘We could have done without rain’ - Gosden

Wednesday 17th October, 2007

THE GROUND at Newmarket has turned soft after receiving 35mm of rain overnight on Tuesday.

Michael Prosser, director of racing at Newmarket, immediately pointed to drying conditions for the rest of the week but John Gosden, trainer of leading Darley Dewhurst Stakes contender Raven’s Pass, wasn’t happy that the rain had hit the NatWest Rowley Mile.

He said: “We could have done without the rain. When we worked on the ground last Sunday Jimmy Fortune said it was on the slow side of good.

“Of course, it will dry and we are going to be on a fresh strip but we are looking at good to soft. It is autumn now and it’s not going to dry out that fast. But Raven’s Pass is in good form.”

Prosser said: “We had more rain than anticipated but the track has taken it very well and the forecast is for it to be dry until next week.”

The unbeaten Raven’s Pass has won all of his races on either fast or good ground.
