24 go forward for the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes

Wednesday 3rd October, 2007

Pride

Pride, winner of last year's Emirates Airline Champion Stakes

A total of 24 acceptors have stood their ground following the latest forfeit stage for the £350,000 Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, run over 10 furlongs of the NatWest Rowley Mile at Newmarket on Champions’ Day, Saturday, October 20, 2007.

A quality line-up looks guaranteed for the prestigious event and includes the Henry Cecil-trained Multidimensional, who was last seen winning a conditions race at Newbury in September, and was a Group Two winner last August in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville.

Last season’s Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud heroine Passage Of Time also represents Cecil, who has won the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes twice before with Indian Skimmer (1988) and Bosra Sham (1996).

Aidan O’Brien looks set to have a strong hand in one of the few major races to have eluded him so far. George Washington could return to the scene of his Stan James 2000 Guineas success, while Group One Irish Champion Stakes winner Dylan Thomas and Irish Derby victor Soldier Of Fortune both go forward.

The Ballydoyle handler has a total of eight entries remaining in the race, including Derby runner-up Eagle Mountain, Mount Nelson, Red Rock Canyon, Song Of Hiawatha and Yellowstone.

Fresh from his success in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, Ramonti could bid to give Godolphin a first victory in the race. Group Two Sky Bet York Stakes winner Stage Gift is also entered for trainer Saeed bin Suroor, along with Blue Ksar.

French-trained horses have won the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes 20 times since 1945, and trainer Alain De Royer-Dupre, successful with Pride in 2006, could be represented by triple Group One winner Mandesha. Jean-Claude Rouget has entered Literato, runner-up in the Group One Prix Du Jockey Club, and Elie Lellouche could send over progressive three-year-old Loup Breton.

Sir Michael Stoute has won the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes twice with Pilsudski (1997) and Kalanisi (2000). Eclipse winner Notnowcato and Group Two Hardwicke Stakes scorer Maraahel could attempt to provide another victory for the Newmarket trainer.

The last two winners of the Stan James 1000 Guineas could also lock horns, with Speciosa and Finsceal Beo both going forward for the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, which has seen 23 female victors since 1945.

42 ACCEPTORS IN DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES

The £250,000 Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, the other Group One contest on Champions’ Day, has 42 acceptors following the October 2 forfeit stage, in what looks set to be one of the two-year-old races of the year.

Last year saw Jim Bolger’s Teofilo triumph on the Natwest Rowley Mile course, and the Irish handler looks to have another exceptional colt in the form of Group One National Stakes winner New Approach.

Rio De La Plata finished second behind New Approach on that occasion, and the Group Two Vintage Stakes victor could reoppose in the seven-furlong Darley Dewhurst Stakes. Godolphin could also be represented by recent nursery winner Ibn Khaldun and promising maiden winner Iguazu Falls.

John Gosden has entered hugely promising colt Raven’s Pass, last seen when destroying a quality field in the Group Three Iveco Solario Stakes at Sandown on September 1. The Newmarket-based handler may also be represented by Group Three winner Young Pretender.

Paul Cole still has Coventry Stakes third Luck Money engaged. Last time out the colt made all to win the very valuable Parknasilla Hotel Goffs Million at the Curragh. The Whatcombe-based handler could also run River Proud, beaten a short head in the Group Two TNT July Stakes by Winker Watson. Cole’s previous winner in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes was in 1990, when subsequent Epsom Derby victor Generous prevailed at 50/1.

Dark Angel is another sales race victor, having won the St Leger Yearling Stakes at York in August. Subsequently successful in the Group Two Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury, the talented juvenile could bid to give Barry Hills a fourth success in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, following Scenic (1988), In Command (1996) and Distant Music (1999).

Hatta Fort was last seen winning the Group Two Weatherbys Superlative Stakes at the Ritz Club July Festival, and his trainer Mick Channon also has Atlantic Sport still engaged.

Mark Johnston has McCartney going forward. The Sheikh Mohammed-owned colt was an impressive winner on his last start in the Group Two Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on September 15.

Sir Gerry was the decisive victor in the Group Two Gimcrack Stakes at York in August, and represents Newmarket handler James Fanshawe.

Sir Michael Stoute won the Darley Dewhurst Stakes in 1986 with Ajdal, and facile maiden scorer Seasider could bid to give the trainer a second success.

French-trained horses have won the race six times since 1945, and Pascal Bary could improve this record with Group Two winner Natagora.

Irish handler David Myerscough could aim for a maiden Pattern race success with the unexposed Bruges, bought by Hamdam Al Maktoum following an easy success in Listed company at Leopardstown.

Aidan O’Brien has a dozen entries remaining, including Samsung St Leger 2YO Stakes second Achilles Of Troy, and Champagne Stakes third One Great Cat. The Ballydoyle handler has been victorious in the Darley Dewhurst once before, saddling the first three home in 2001, headed by the great Rock Of Gibraltar.

62 FOR totesport.com CESAREWITCH

62 FOR totesport.com CESAREWITCH

62 horses remain in the totesport.com Cesarewitch following the second forfeit stage on October 2. The famous handicap, run over two and a quarter miles at Newmarket on Champions’ Day, Saturday, October 20, again looks set to be contested by a variety of horses, from Royal Ascot winners to horses who have gone on to glory at the Cheltenham Festival.

Philip Hobbs won the race last season with the high-class hurdler Detroit City. This year he relies on Fair Along, who was second in both the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham and the totesport Chester Cup earlier this season. Triumph Hurdle runner-up Liberate could also represent the Minehead-based handler.

Other horses better known for their jumping exploits include the John Queally-trained Al Eile, winner of the Grade One Aintree Hurdle at the Grand National meeting this year. Burntoakboy is another noted for his exploits over hurdles, having triumphed in the Coral Cup at last season’s Cheltenham Festival.

Samurai Way could look to add to Luca Cumani’s handicap successes this season. Second in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock, the five-year-old won over two miles at Ascot on September 29.

Macorville finished fourth in the Irish St Leger, only six-and-a-half lengths behind Yeats. A reproduction of that form would surely see him go close.

Irish handler Tony Martin won the totesport.com Cambridgeshire in 1999 with She’s Our Mare, and bids for the second leg of the Autumn double with Leg Spinner, Top The Charts and Arc Bleu. Sandymount Earl, owned by Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones and trained by Jessica Harrington, is another Irish contender still engaged.

The last two winners of the Ascot Stakes also remain Full House won the race this year, while Baddam triumphed in 2006, before going on to win the marathon Queen Alexandra Stakes at the same meeting. Enjoy The Moment beat Baddam is this year’s renewal of the 2m 5f event, and the progressive four-year-old could take his chance in the totesport.com Cesarewitch.
