THE first day of the final July Course meeting in 2007 saw several impressive performances, not least that of Yankadi in the Renault Master EBF Maiden.
The Barry Hills-trained son of Johannesburg made light of the testing ground conditions in the seven-furlong contest, pulling away to score by two lengths from Rochefort.
Stan James, sponsors of the 2000 Guineas, clearly took a favourable view of the display as they gave the Barry Hills-trained newcomer an introductory 50-1 quote for the Classic on the Rowley Mile.
Hills said: “He is a nice, scopey horse and he liked the ground. He is still a big baby and will only run once or twice more this season.
"I don't know where he will go, but something like the Horris Hill would be the plan - although he will not come out quickly."
Kotsi also caught the eye in taking the EBF Maiden Fillies’ event by half-a-length from Annie Stakes. The debutante gave locally-based trainer Ed Vaughan a fifth winner from nine runners.
Vaughan said: “She is a very nice filly who has shown us plenty at home. She will come on a ton for it and the May Hill is a possibility but we will see how she comes out of this first.”
Ajaan maintained his progress with an 11-10 victory in the Breheny handicap, while the £40,000 DBS St Leger Yearling Stakes went the way of Edge Of Gold.
Also on target were Cobo Bay (Renault Vans Nursery handicap), Norisan (Renault Traffic claimer) and Efistorm (Renault Kangoo handicap).
The meeting resumes this afternoon at 1.50pm.
