Lester Piggott - suffered heart problem

NEWMARKET Racecourses today sends its best wishes to Lester Piggott, who has sadly suffered a recurrence of a heart problem.

Piggott is currently in intensive care in a hospital in Switzerland where it has been reported that he is 'conscious and coherent' by his son-in-law William Haggas, the Newmarket-based trainer.

The NatWest Rowley Mile is due to be honouring the legendary jockey's outstanding career this Saturday with Lester Piggott Day, sponsored by betdirect. Piggott was scheduled to be there with members of his family and friends.

Alistair Haggis, spokesman for Newmarket Racecourses, said: "We were very saddened to hear the news that Lester's heart problem had recurred. Everyone at Newmarket Racecourses wishes him all the very best for a full and speedy recovery.

"We will be consulting with Lester's family and will make an announcement tomorrow (Wednesday) about plans for Saturday."
