US Ranger was today supplemented at a cost of £25,000 for this Saturday’s Stan James 2000 Guineas.
The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt is as low as 6-1 with the sponsors for the first classic of the year, which will be staged on the NatWest Rowley Mile at Newmarket.
The French raider is unbeaten in four starts and impressed on April 11 with a Listed success at Maisons-Laffitte on what was his seasonal reappearance. He worked well at Pau in south-west France on Saturday morning and connections are ready to ship him to England.
“He has certainly come on since his last race and I couldn’t be better pleased,” Rouget told the Racing Post.
Confirmation regarding US Ranger came as the five-day entries were revealed. There were no major surprises with the 9-4 favourite Teofilo standing his ground, as did Adagio. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt - a very smart winner of the banshahousestables.com Craven Stakes 11 days ago - was another to gallop at the weekend.
Stoute said: “I’m very happy. I’ve always rated him very highly and his homework has been very impressive.”
While there were 30 entries in total for the Stan James 2000 Guineas, there were five less for the Stan James 1000 Guineas, which will be run at Newmarket this Sunday.
The Jim Bolger-trained Fincsceal Beo is the 13-8 favourite for the fillies’ classic and 4-1 shot Sander Camillo leads the English challenge.
She shaped up nicely in her latest piece of fast work, stretching out in solid fashion on the racecourse on Saturday morning.
