SANDER Camillo faces a key work-out at Newmarket on Saturday morning ahead of a planned crack at the Stan James 1000 Guineas on May 6.

The daughter of Dixie Union was the ante-post favourite for the fillies' classic ahead of her seasonal reappearance in the Shadwell Nell Gwyn Stakes.

But she could only finish second - beaten a neck - to Scarlet Runner in the seven-furlong Group 3 and has been eased out to 7-1 with the sponsors.Connections put her below-par display down to becoming tied-up.

Trainer Jeremy Noseda brings Sander Camillo back to the NatWest Rowley Mile course tomorrow to work over six furlongs in company with two galloping companions.

She will be put through her paces at 7.am - an hour ahead of a planned stretch-out for the Mike De Kock-trained Drayton, who holds an entry in the Stan James 2000 Guineas.

Meanwhile, Newmarket's director of racing Michael Prosser has delivered a latest bulletin on the ground.

Prosser said: "We put 10 millimetres of water on earlier this week which has held the ground at good-to-firm, though it's a little bit quicker in a couple of places including the bushes two-and-a-half furlongs from the finish. The going stick reading is 10.2.

"The temperature is set to hit a high of 25C over the weekend which could well spark showers on Sunday and Monday. It's set to cool down thereafter with top temperatures of 16C or 17C, so evaporation will be less of a problem but there is no further rain forecast.

"If we were to miss the showers, I've got plenty of time to irrigate ahead of the Stan James Guineas Festival next weekend. My aim is to ensure decent fast ground with no jar."
