Major Cadeaux upstages Dutch Art
MAJOR Cadeaux has been slashed from 16-1 to 6s by the sponsors for the Stan James 2000 Guineas after a cracking success in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury today. The Richard Hannon-trained colt beat the odds-on favourite Dutch Art and it is set to be next stop Newmarket on May 5 for him.
The son of Cadeaux Genereux was second in the Coventry Stakes last summer but had his two-year-old campaign cut short after returning jarred up from Royal Ascot. But he looks a three-year-old of some promise on the evidence of his comeback display in the Group 3.
Major Cadeaux was entitled to be a little ring-rusty in what was his first run for 305 days. However, jockey Richard Hughes gave him a textbook ride from the front and he came home with a three-and-a-half lengths to spare from Dutch Art.
Richard Hannon jnr, assistant to his father, said: “We always thought he was a very good horse. We had problems after Royal Ascot last year and he took a long time to get over them. In the end we decided to keep him for this year and he has done very well from two to three. The 2000 Guineas? I fancy him but of course I’m going to!”
Another 2000 Guineas indicator at Newbury was provided by Diamond Tycoon, who ran away with the mile maiden. Stan James cut the Brian Meehan-trained colt to 20-1 (from 100) for the first classic of the season.
Meanwhile, the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes was won by 25-1 chance Majestic Roi, who does not carry a Stan James 1000 Guineas entry. She beat the 2006 Cheveley Park winner Indian Ink by a neck.
